Questions and answers
You’re interested in becoming an apprentice at Abbott, but you still have questions? No problem, we have the answers – and we look forward to receiving your application.
What is the ideal point in time for my application?
Applications should be submitted in fall after summer break, approximately one year before the training program begins. Please submit documents via our online career portal only, not by e-mail or post.
What kind of documents am I supposed to submit?
We will need a cover letter including a motivational statement, a résumé, and copies of your most recent two school reports . If you have some work or internship experience, please include the certificates or references. When you use the online career portal, you can submit the documents electronically.
How important are good marks?
Good marks help convince us that you will succeed in your apprenticeship program. However, we also use interviews to get an impression of your personality and suitability for the desired profession.
How do I apply?
Please apply via our online career portal.
What training for secondary school graduates does Abbott offer?
We offer training programs in the following areas and locations:
- Office Communications Assistant (Ludwigshafen)
- Bachelor of Science Business IT (BSc) (Ludwigshafen)
- Bachelor of Arts Business Administration/Industry (BA) (Ludwigshafen and Wiesbaden)
Careers in life sciences are also an option: We train Biological Lab Technicians in cooperation with Provadis in Ludwigshafen. Training as a Chemical Lab Technician or Pharmaceutical Production Technician is conducted in cooperation with Roche in Mannheim.
How does Abbott support apprentices?
Apprentices work in a variety of departments, getting to know our colleagues and products. They are looked after by instructors who act as first point of contact and pass on practical knowledge. We want our employees to be as skilled and knowledgeable as possible.
How can I get to know Abbott before applying?
We regularly participate in Jugend-denkt-Zukunft (a science think tank for secondary school students) and Girls’ Day. The purpose of these events is to show school students our work at a fairly high level of detail. If you are 18 years or older, you may apply for an internship during school holidays. The minimum duration of an internship is three weeks, and we will require a copy of your school ID or certificate of enrolment.
What compensation does Abbott offer apprentices ?
Compensation depends on the training program selected as well as on collective bargaining agreements applicable in the German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. Like all Abbott employees, trainees receive holiday pay and a Christmas bonus equal to one month’s salary. They can also benefit from our savings schemes.
What happens after my apprenticeship?
We invest in training because we hope our apprentices will pursue careers with Abbott. To enable timely professional deployment and career planning, we will discuss relevant opportunities with you up to six months before your apprenticeship is completed.
