New directions with Abbott
Office Communications Assistant::
Managing information
Spreadsheets don’t scare you? You think coordinating schedules is easy? Then training as an Office Communications Assistant at Abbott might be the right career for you. You will learn how to manage an office, how to prepare and communicate information effectively, and get to know the basic instruments of accounting and controlling. You will become acquainted with environmental regulations and learn the administration of specific areas such as Human Resources. The prerequisite is a secondary school diploma ( e.g. German Realschule, British GCSE).
During your three-year apprenticeship, as you move through various business departments such as sales or purchasing, you will always be contributing indirectly to human health – the guiding principle at Abbott. You can count on the support of experienced staff at all times. In addition to your workday activities, you will attend a vocational college and learn about the theory behind purchasing, Sales, Production, and Human Resources. Even before you complete your apprenticeship, we will talk to you about your next assignment.
Chemical Laboratory Technician:
Mobilizing molecules
Training for Chemical Lab Technicians has a strong tradition at Abbott. After all, the company has been creating new compounds for medical use for over 120 years. To make sure our pioneering tradition continues, we are always looking for people with a passion for precision. Developing new substances requires that experiments be meticulously planned and executed. Great performance is our goal, but safety and environmental protection are always the top priorities.
If you have completed an academic or non-academic secondary school with good marks and submitted your application online, you could soon find yourself in an Abbot laboratory. Together with our chemists you will help develop new substances and improve production processes, recording your findings in detailed reports. Environmental regulations are as much a part of your vocational curriculum as state-of-the-art techniques in chemical engineering. To assure that our apprentices’ knowledge base is as broad as possible, our chemical lab technicians are trained in cooperation with Roche in Mannheim.
Pharmaceutical Production Technician:
Manufacturing drugs
Pharmaceutical Production Technicians work in factories. However, those unglamorous surroundings are home to vitally important activities. The production of pills, injections, and nutritional products is automated, but technicians are needed to assure that production runs smoothly. Patients rely on the quality of the final product. Responsibility for assuring high quality is shared around the world, from researchers in drug discovery to technicians in production. Abbott’s equipment is state-of-the-art, so that apprentices learn to operate the most modern machines available. Pharmaceutical Production Technicians monitor drug packaging as well. Our Pharmaceutical Production Technicians are trained in collaboration with Roche.
In addition to a non-academic secondary school diploma, we expect a high degree of reliability and precision. Training typically lasts three and a half years. You will learn the production of solid and liquid dosage forms and create powders, granules, pills, emulsions, and extracts – whatever dosage form is appropriate. You will learn to maintain equipment and perform functional checks to ensure consistent quality. Without the vital last step of flawless production, we would never be able to achieve our objective of contributing to health and quality of life.
Biological Laboratory Technician:
Cultivating cells
Research is our passion. More than 7,000 scientists around the world work for Abbott, developing innovative therapies and medicines. But before a new drug can be recommended to patients, the substance must prove its efficacy in extensive tests. Experiments on microorganisms, plants, and animals are the first steps. Biological lab assistants contribute to pioneering endeavors on a daily basis.
We expect our trainees to approach natural resources with respect. The accurate recording of test results is no less important than following experimental protocols exactly. Both criteria must be fulfilled to enable eventual approval for new active substances. Your interest in biology and biotechnological processes should be matched by your readiness to master complex analytical equipment and generate computerized evaluations of biological data. Our biological lab assistants are trained in cooperation with Provadis in Frankfurt-Höchst.

Bachelor of Science in Business IT (BSc) or
Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration/Industry (BA)
University students often wish their courses had more practical relevance, whilst apprentices frequently express a desire for more theory. You will get both through our cooperative training approach. While getting hands-on business experience at Abbott, you also earn a bachelor’s degree. Our partners, the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Mannheim and the Hessian University of Cooperative Education in Frankfurt, provide high educational quality to our employees.
Academic high school graduates with an interest in our business can apply for studies leading to a Bachelor of Science in Business IT (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration/Industry (BA) degree. Three months of study alternate with three months of practical work experience each semester. The BA in Business Administration/Industry provides a broad introduction to business administration with a focus on specializations including human resources and finance. The BSc in business economics is offered in Ludwigshafen only, with internships focusing on the development and utilization of business IT systems. Following successful completion of your studies, we will sit down with you and determine how to make the best use of your knowledge and experience – for yourself and for Abbott.
