Any questions?
You’re interested in an Abbott internship and have questions about the application process? Here are the answers to frequently asked questions.
Can I apply for an internship immediately after leaving school?
You can apply for an internship as soon as you are 18 years old. The internship should last at least three weeks. We will require a copy of your student ID or a current certificate of enrolment.
How do I apply for an internship or final thesis project?
Please apply via our online career portal. After having entered your name and email address to obtain your access code, you set up an application folder for the position you seek. Once you have checked the relevant fields in your online profile, simply submit your application. We will reply within four weeks. If your competencies meet our requirements, you will be invited for a series of personal interviews.
Can I apply for a position that isn’t posted?
We welcome every application, because we are always happy to hear from talented young people. Even if an internship has not yet been advertised, or the exact topic of a research project has not yet been determined, we might be in the process of developing a project that meets your needs.
How long does an internship last?
An internship for secondary school students should last at least three weeks. University student internships linked to specific projects generally last three to six months as tasks are more complex. A typical project for an informatics internship might involve re-designing a website or generating user documentation in PDF and HTML for utilization of analytical software on a Linux cluster.
How are internships compensated?
All interns are paid for their work at Abbott. However, the purpose of an internship is not only based upon financial reasons. It enables you to gather professional experience under close supervision during your studies. That experience could make a difference when applying for jobs afterwards.
Will I get a job offer after having completed my thesis?
When we recruit students to write bachelor dissertations or master theses with us, or when we support the topics they propose, we invest in a long-term relationship. As a global health care company facing a variety of challenges, from research to sales, we are eager to work with talented people from a wide range of backgrounds. Never hesitate to ask about your prospects at Abbott.
Do you distinguish between voluntary and mandatory internships?
Yes, we do. The duration of mandatory internships is determined by the respective university or institution. If the internship is done on your own initiative, its duration is negotiable.
Can I apply for an internship after starting to write my thesis?
As a rule of thumb, internships cannot be initiated at that final stage. Our internships are intended to give students a taste of working at Abbott before they finish their studies. However, even if we are not currently posting a dissertation or thesis project that suits you, feel free to complete an online profile on our career portal. We are eager to talk to motivated students.
What documents am I supposed to submit?
We require a cover letter, a résumé, certificates and references from former employers (if applicable). Please submit documents via our career portal only and also complete the online job profile by stating your qualifications, skills, and experience. That information helps us match your competencies against our requirements.
How does the application process for dissertation/thesis projects work?
Applications should be submitted online only. If your profile meets our needs and your dissertation or thesis topic matches the specifications of one of our divisions, we will invite you for a series of interviews with managers and human resources experts. If you convince us of your talent and motivation, you will receive an attractive offer within a short period of time.
